What Gel Mix 480 is — and what makes it different

A new format

Gel Mix 480 is a powder that dissolves in 200 ml of water to produce a hydrogel fuel. It is not a ready-to-use sachet gel. It is not a drink mix. It sits between the two — a distinct format designed to be prepared in a softflask before a long effort and consumed on the go.

This is new for Maurten. Athletes familiar with Gel 100 or Gel 160 will notice the difference immediately — the preparation, the flask, the texture. That difference is intentional.

A new consistency

When dissolved in water, Gel Mix 480 produces a consistency thicker than Drink Mix and looser than Gel — a texture in between the two existing formats. Molly Seidel describes it as “a little bit thicker than Drink Mix” but feeling “more like I’m taking a liquid rather than a gel.”

Gel Mix 480 is pH-sensitive. It behaves like Drink Mix — forming a hydrogel in the acidity of the stomach. This change encapsulates the carbohydrates, carrying them through the stomach to be absorbed and used as fuel. The mechanism is the same as the rest of the Maurten range.

The consistency may vary slightly depending on water temperature and mixing. A thorough shake after preparation ensures optimal texture.

The numbers

One sachet of Gel Mix 480 contains 120 grams of carbohydrate and 480 kcal. The 480 in the name refers to that caloric content. Dissolved in 200 ml of water, it can be consumed across a single long effort or split across two.

By carbohydrate volume and cost per gram, Gel Mix 480 offers greater value than the sachet gel formats — making consistent, high-carbohydrate hydrogel fueling viable across the long efforts that demand it.

Gel Mix Flask

Gel Mix 480 is designed to be prepared and consumed using a soft flask. The prepared Gel Mix can be stored in a sealed softflask in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours.

Additions

Gel Mix 480 is compatible with all four Maurten Additions: Cola, Orange, Apple, and Menthol. Additions allow athletes to vary the taste without impacting the function of Hydrogel Technology. They play a practical role in managing flavor fatigue across long efforts.
